IFALPA's Hall of Fame

Posted by Steve on behalf of Frank Santoni

Dear Attendees,

Thus far we have 40 attendees for our dinner with the possibility of several others who will not know until later this month.  We do not, at this time, know how many awardees or guests will be in attendance.

We do have transport provided at no charge from the afternoon event to our dinner but not for the return.

Our contact in Luxembourg has asked if we would like to arrange for a bus for the return to take us all from the restaurant to the Convention Center which is about a 4 to 6 minute walk from the various hotels being used by IFALPA. The cost of this bus would add 5 Euros to the cost of each dinner.  This would be slightly better than a taxi from the restaurant to the hotel which would be approximately 27 Euros for 4 people according to the taxi website I found.

If we chose the bus we would have to leave at a designated time or incur an extra charge.  I would suggest 9:30 pm or 10 pm.

Please let me know your preference, first if you want a bus and second what time you think we should finish. I will go with the majority decision.

Best regards,

Frank

Hi Frank,

My initial reaction is that a bus at 9.30 would make it a very short evening to catch up with our fellow AO members for those of us long-standing retirees who have no other participation in conference activity, unless there is some other social function going on when we get back to the Conference centre or hotels that we can gatecrash to continue for a bit! Also, do we know where the afternoon event is taking place, and can we take the transport FROM there if it is more convenient than taking a taxi direct from our hotel to the restaurant? Otherwise it only allows 2 hours 30 maximum socialising time for the entire evening from 7 pm, which starts to get a bit pricey on a per hour basis when we are also paying our own travel and hotel costs!

Best regards

Steve

I don’t know what the venue is for Sunday, but on the agenda it shows buses leave at 16:45 and it lasts an indefinite time. If we have to return to the hotel to dress for dinner it doesn’t leave us much time there either. It doesn’t seem as though there is a party to crash that evening either.  What to do?

I think a bus is good and I vote for 2130.

Dear Frank, dear fellow Alpha-Omega Members,

the low number of replies makes me believe that I am not the only one having difficulty in making a decision. As little detail is known about the Sunday afternoon (or rather evening) event that is intended to commemorate the 50th anniversary of ALPL, we don’t have a good basis for our decision. Therefore I take the liberty to speculate a bit to create possible options and hope that this sparks votes that allow us to find a good solution. Please feel free to add more options to the brainstorming, which should never be limited to sensible choices to avoid curtailment of creativity!

Option 1: As the official event starts with departure at 16:45, there would be the opportunity to have an Alpha-Omega lunch or brunch. We would have a lot of time for us and then could join the rest of IFALPA for the evening event. Potential drawback for this solution: some members might have planned to arrive only for an evening event.

Option 2: We could all dress up with our exclusive ties and join the evening event and try to find a location there, where we could recess for a couple of hours to hold the Alpha-Omega Dinner. This would increase the visibility of the AO and enable us to promote and explain ourselves during the common part. And we could rejoin the crowd once we had enough of us.

Option 3: With or without AO tie, we could join the crowd for the initial part of the evening event and then (not too early) leave for our own dinner and stay there a little bit longer, as the crowd will not return to the hotels before midnight and there is no alternative (hospitality night) planned. This might require a pallet of Red Bull for those of us (like me) who suffer from jet lag and would rather like to go to bed early!

Option 4: Forget about the ALPL anniversary and the rest of the crowd. We are a sufficiently large group to keep ourselves entertained for a whole evening. Luxembourg is small enough so that the IFALPA President can take a taxi to join us for a while and then return to the ALPL Party (if he so wishes).

Option 5: Let’s raid the nearest MacDonalds, get agitated by the junk food and split into several battle groups. Occupy the European Court of Justice and other EU institutions and drink all the Cremant that they have cooled!

Now: add, amend, contend, condemn - and vote.

Looking forward to see you in Luxembourg and have serious fun together!

Heinz

I like Hans suggestion 1 as it is really a good solution.

Speak up if you were planning to arrive only for an evening event?

It may well be too late to change to a lunch event, but I am planning to arrive LUX at 10:25 so would be happy to come for lunch. Since I cannot go to the Luxembourg association's evening event (as I am not registered for the conference itself), that would also enable me to cancel the night's hotel and go back home the same evening!  Assuming it stays as an evening though, I'd be very happy to meet up with any A-O members for lunch as well!

Good comments by all but here are some other facts. The dinner arrangements have been in the works since October last and are in the final stages of planning. We have looked at many of the area restaurants and this one was the most attractive. Many were closed on Sunday or wanted too much money. The only question remaining is the bus transportation from the event and time to end the event. I have had several requests for both 9:30 and 10:00 but am leaning towards 10:00 to give us adequate time to visit.

I pulsed IFALPA about the lunch idea but was told that the IFALPA President and some of the other Alpha Omega members still active would probably not be able to come due to work. That's why I thought the traditional dinner option was the best. It worked out very well last year.

A piece of recent good news is that I've also been told by IFALPA and ALPL that all Alpha Omega Members are invited to the Sunday afternoon event whether or not they signed up for the conference. I would suggest that everyone try to make it and have the extra time there to visit with old friends. That bus leaves around 1645 and would give members close to 2 hours at the event. Everyone could then get on the bus from the event to the A/O dinner from there. It would mean bringing the A/O ties to the event but that's exactly what we did last year and it worked.

I would also suggest that if others would like to meet for lunch in the hotel are they could arrange that themselves.

Frank, that is great news, I think you have solved the problem for this year with the extension of the invitation to the afternoon ALPAL party - very well done indeed and many thanks.

I for one also hope to be around at lunchtime and would like to meet up with any other members who are free. (Nearer the time we'll need to arrange a meeting place though as there are 3 different hotels in use plus the Conference Centre itself.

Hi Frank, this looks ok for me. I think if some friends like to spend extra time at the dinner location they still can organise a taxi back to the hotels... So lets try to meet prior to the Bus to the ALPAL event for a coffee or else for a chat.

All the best

Hi Frank, and all,
today I sent an email ("reply to all" - probably a list of those that are signed up) with my primary support for Heinz' suggestion of a brunch iso dinner. Only by now, browsing through the A-O-site, I saw that the earlier emails have been transferred to start the thread here, and that there were some consequential exchanges. So let's try to optimise our time as suggested on 7 Feb before and at the event and dinner; I would still believe that for the return a bus might unnecessarily limit options as they might arise and taxis would allow for flexibility at not really unreasonable cost in view of the distances involved.
See you in Luxembourg
Christian

Dear All

I realise there are no easy answers to all this, but I feel I should point out that a "Sunday Brunch" would preclude one of our new members, Carole Couchman, from being able to attend.

Because the bus company had a deadline of Feb 8 for a decision and based on the majority response that wanted to have a bus, I signed a contract for the bus to pick us up at our desired time. I am thinking to do that at 9:45 pm because half of us wanted 9:30 and the other 10:00. I just need to let them know. If some would like to skip the bus that would also be OK and they could take a taxi back to the hotel.

I will try to organize a time on Sunday to have a discussion for the future with those who are interested.

Best,
Frank
